A: NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and was developed back in the 1970's in California, USA by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. The official definition of NLP is "the study of the structure of subjective experience". Does this sound like gobble-di-gook to you? Well to put it more simply.........it is the study of human excellence and modelling people's behaviour and strategies that they do so well so that we can use these great strategies in our own field or in other fields.

Neuro Linguistic Programming emerges from modelling human behaviours and thought processes. NLP models involve finding how the brain ("Neuro") is operating, by analyzing language patterns ("Linguistic") and non-verbal communication. The results are put into step-by-step strategies or programmes ("Programming") that allow the skills to be transferred to others or different contexts. (Adapted from Robert Dilts, 1998).

We probably use the tools and techniques of NLP everyday and having been using it ever since we can remember, but we do not call it NLP. In fact some of these NLP strategies have been developed and recorded in other formats for thousands of years as NLP brings in learning from other philosophies and fields such as how the mind and body creates one system and they affect each other. It also brings in how people take in information externally, how we process informaion uniquely from on another and how we express ourselves to each other either verbally or non-verbally.

NLP can give us some insight as to how we are with ourselves and with others and how we can be with ourselves and others if we know what the best strategies are for us to function and perform in an elite way. It is literally about the difference that makes the difference.
